What is CANICROSS...

CaniCross is an impressive off-road recreational activity that has been gaining more and more enthusiasts worldwide in recent years. The organization of such a sporting event, involving a human and a dog as a team, offers an exhilarating experience, promoting health and well-being for both. CaniCross evolved from the necessity to train sled dogs during snowless periods Related events include Bikejöring (cyclist with dog), Dog Scootering (scooter and dog), and Skijoring (skier and dog) CaniCross is not only a method to bond further with your beloved dog, but it also positively contributes to its socialization, allowing it to engage its mind effectively in each exercise and activity with great success To engage in Canicross, you’ll need the proper equipment and relatively minor training or experience that you can acquire through a beginner-level race. This allows for both you and your dog to gain the necessary skills and familiarity with the activity You can start gradually, initially with walks and brisk walking, then gradually transition to light running

STARTING WITH CANICROSS

Dogs cannot participate in Canicross activities until they reach their 12th month and in specific events until their 18th month That doesn’t mean you can’t start training them beforehand In reality, puppies can learn a lot through Canicross training. It can be combined with obedience training to ensure that their energy is released while they simultaneously learn how to behave

You also need to ensure that you yourself are at a certain level of fitness to compete alongside your dog Your dog may lead you, but you need to be able to keep up with them Training should begin with walking or brisk walking Your puppy should be acclimated to the outdoors and all the challenges it will encounter Teach them how to ignore other people, dogs, or animals It’s better to ensure they know how to ignore squirrels and other animals. Otherwise, the results might not be pleasant, potentially leading to losing the training track altogether.

Teach them the commands they should know during an activity. The commands for ‘go’, ‘stop’, ‘turn left’ or ‘right’, ‘slow down’, and ‘speed up’ are essential Once they’ve learned these, you can introduce more advanced commands that can benefit them during the activity or training

Once they are familiar with the commands, you can start running together. Training and improving endurance levels for both you and your dog is not a bad idea. Then it’s time to train your dog while wearing the appropriate equipment Take frequent breaks and make sure they don’t get overly tired And remember, your dog is not a tool.

It’s your other self! [RESPECT YOUR DOG]

GIVE GREAT IMPORTANCE TO THE EQUIPMENT.

EQUIPMENT

To start, you’ll definitely need a good pair of off-road running shoes for yourself. You’ll also need a running belt to keep your hands free, allowing you to move and control yourself in case of instability or a fall. The bungee leash is essential and it’s what connects you to the dog’s harness. The bungee leash should be elastic and no more than 2 meters long. The elasticity of the leash is important because this way, your dog self-regulates and is not strained by sudden pulls. If you have more than one dog, then you will need a double leash The Freemotion Harness is another important piece of equipment for your dog Θα πρέπει να το πάρετε και να το τοποθετήσετε έτσι ώστε να του ταιριάζει τέλεια. The harness helps the dog move freely without causing any harm during movements. Particular attention should be paid to choosing the harness.
